August 29, 2012 at 8:44 amHi Mrs Woods!

I just had this test done. I wouldn't say it's painful, but it is definitely very uncomfortable. They have to clamp your cervix with a tool and straighten out your canal prior to inserting the catheter. That was the worst part for me. I didn't feel the dye going in. She had me roll onto each side in order to get different views. It's over very quickly, under a minute. Afterwards, I felt very crampy, slightly worse than AF but that was gone by the next morning. I was able to return to work immediately after the test. I took 2 extra strength Tylenol about an hour prior to the test and again about 4 hours after. Check with your nurse or doctor if you should do that as well. You may experience discomfort when the dye is injected if you have any anatomical issues or blockages. The hsg may even clear a blockage. The radiology tech told me you are very fertile for several months after, so I'm hoping I just needed the cobwebs cleared out :)

Is your test scheduled? Or do you need to wait for AF to do that?

August 29, 2012 at 9:33 amHi MrsWoods! It's been awhile since we shared an update. I'm glad to see you're getting tests run. I've not had the HSG test, but I'll be crossing my fingers that it goes well and you get the postive answers you need!! When is your test? Will you keep us updated?

August 29, 2012 at 11:02 amI had mine done on July 31st and I am not going to sugarcoat it, it was awful. Most horrible pain of my life. The catch though there is that I had a blockage and the doctor said that is the reason it hurt like it did. I don't know anyone else that had the kind of experience I did so you probably have nothing to worry about. Best of luck and let us know how it goes! I don't mean to scare you so I'm sorry if I did. My experience wasn't typical!

August 29, 2012 at 11:12 amI had mine done in jan. and no blockage but still hurt like hell. It was the worst pain ive ever had but the good news is its quick and as soon as they take the equip out the cramping stops!  It will be okay hun, take 800 mg of Ibuprofen if they havent given you anything.  After my experience I feel like they should give one simple pill to ease the pain but my doc didnt.

August 29, 2012 at 11:32 amMaybe I have a high pain tolerance! ;) Don't get me wrong, it's not like I'd want to do it again but it certainly wasn't the worst pain I've ever been in. I'm sure you'll be fine Mrs Woods! Let us know how you make out.

September 7, 2012 at 9:29 amAfter an HSG, it's very possible that your vaginal readings will be affected. I definitely wouldn't consider that to be an accurate reading!

September 7, 2012 at 5:19 pmHi,

Mrs Woods, I'm glad you asked this question.  I might have this dye test done if these 3 cycles of Clomid do not work.  We'll probably try IUI if these 3 cycles of Clomid do not work.  I'm on my first cycle of Clomid right now.  I should O at the end of next week, so we're going to start bd'ing every other day starting tonight until AF arrives.  Hopefully she won't;-)

I hope HSG doesn't hurt too much, but it's worth.  I really hope it doesn't hurt that much for you, Mrs. Woods.  I also hope it doesn't hurt me if I have it, lol!

Best of luck!  Keep us updated.

September 9, 2012 at 9:22 amI had mine on sept 6th. It was painful the moment they put the dye on. Really really hurt, but not the worst pain of my life (natural miscarriage was). Dr told me to take ibuprofen if I wanted before the test but I didn't. As soon it is done (2mins), pain is gone. It is worth going through because you sort things out, and get your pipes cleaned, literally!! hahaha. Even if they are not blocked you might have debris or mucus making it more difficult to conceive. Dr said also chances of conceiving are higer then next 3 months.

Good luck!!!

September 27, 2012 at 10:32 amI went back to work after mine. I actually work across the street from the hospital where it was performed so I walked back and continued on with my day. You will def need a pad after. I didn't experience any bleeding after but the dye continues to leak out and you don't want it getting on your clothes. The hospital supplied pads but they were huge, like diapers, so I opted to use my own. Try to releax! You'll be fine. They say you're very fertile afterwards so maybe this will do the trick for you! Let us know how you make out!
Good luck on Sat Suzanne! I'll be stalking your blog!

September 27, 2012 at 11:14 amMy insurance doesn't have any infertility coverage. It completely sucks, and we are paying as we go for every little thing. At least we started saving as much as we could last spring so that if this time came, we would at least be somewhat prepared. I did Clomid for 3 cycles. 2 cycles were unmonitored and then on the 3rd cycle I found out that Clomid had completely ruined my lining. So it was basically a 4 month waste in my case. I'm on Femara and Gonal F (injectibles) now and it seems my lining is handling those much better. I did have strong ovulations on Clomid so it did work for me, unfortunatley the side effects were the killer. I think if you do try Clomid just make sure you're monitored.

Thanks Lotus!!!

September 28, 2012 at 5:24 amHSG test easy as pie... no cramping or bleeding............................well I though its was easy as pie when I got home about an hour later I had terrible cramps very little spotting. It was not as bad as I thought. I didn't feel anything while the dr was doing the test. Both tubes are open. Sadly the results just leaves me with more question. Why it hasn't happen yet? What else could be the problem? Hopefully as I continue to have test done a BFP will be the end result. Feeling a little crampy today and bloated thank goodness I'm off from work.

September 28, 2012 at 5:56 amI'm so glad it went better than expected and that they found nothing wrong. It's a catch 22 isn't it? If they find something you know, but if they don't, there's that lingering question of why. Baby dance you're heart out these next few months. Maybe that HSG was just what you needed to get things flowing! Have a nice and relaxing weekend!

September 28, 2012 at 6:56 am@Mrswoods...I've been trying to conceive for more than 18 months. I had my HSG test on sept7. Results came ok, and it gave me lots of confusion because then I still didn't know what was wrong.  Dr said that unblocked tubes are good news (if not, your only chance would be IVF). Also, he said you are 30% more fertile after the test because it sort of "cleans the pipes". I found out 3 days ago (10dpo) that I am pregnant. So... THIS IS COULD BE YOUR LUCKY MONTH TOO!!!!

Relax and do a lot of BD this month!!!!!! I wish you the best.

September 29, 2012 at 7:30 amThanks so much ladies for all of the kind words. I think next on the check off list is seman check for DH. He is not to thrilled about that but is willing to do so. He has 2 DD from pervious relationship but it is still better to check . Not quite ready to Bd at the moment but will get started asap

@babyoygal so sorry for the bad new regarding your tubes. I wish you the best. Save and save for the IVF as long as there are options out there you have a chance don't give up.
